DRAINAGE ACCESS COVERS WITH INFILL CAPABILITY

Wunder-Grate

Wunder-Grates apply the recessed infill technology of our Wunder-Cover system to stormwater drainage applications.

Traditional drainage grates are functional but visually intrusive. Wunder-Grates combine effective drainage performance with aesthetic integration, using a recessed frame that accepts infill materials while maintaining stormwater flow through carefully designed openings.

Manufactured in New Zealand.

FAQ

Frequently Asked

What are Wunder-Grates?

Wunder-Grates are drainage grates with recessed infill capability, designed to blend seamlessly with surrounding surfaces while maintaining effective stormwater flow. Unlike traditional drainage grates, Wunder-Grates allow infill with pavers, concrete, or other materials, making them virtually invisible in streetscapes and landscaping.

What's the difference between Wunder-Covers and Wunder-Grates?

Wunder-Covers are solid recessed trays for utility access (manholes, inspection chambers). Wunder-Grates have drainage openings to allow stormwater flow while still providing the aesthetic infill system. Both use the same recessed frame technology.

What load class are Wunder-Grates?

Wunder-Grates are suitable for Class A, B, and C applications, covering pedestrian areas, residential driveways, car parks, and light vehicle traffic. Higher load classes available for specific applications.

Can Wunder-Grates handle heavy vehicles?

Standard Wunder-Grates are designed for pedestrian and light vehicle applications (Class A-C). For roads with heavy vehicle traffic, higher load ratings can be specified. Contact us to discuss Class D or higher requirements.

Do Wunder-Grates reduce drainage capacity?

Wunder-Grates are designed to maintain effective stormwater flow. The grid openings are sized to provide adequate hydraulic performance while supporting the infill material. Drainage capacity depends on grate configuration and infill type.

What infill materials work with Wunder-Grates?

Pavers, brick, and concrete are common infill options. You can also leave sections of the grate open for maximum drainage flow, or use a combination of infilled and open areas depending on drainage requirements.

Are Wunder-Grates suitable for coastal areas?

Yes, when specified in stainless steel. Stainless steel construction is strongly recommended for coastal and high-salt environments to prevent corrosion. Hot-dipped galvanised steel is standard for inland applications.

How deep are Wunder-Grates?

Standard tray depth is 100mm, suitable for most paver and tile applications. 150mm deep trays are available for natural grass installations requiring deeper soil for root growth.

ABOUT WUNDER-GRATES

Traditional drainage grates are functional but visually intrusive – exactly the problem Wunder-Covers were designed to solve for utility access. Wunder-Grates apply the same recessed infill technology to stormwater drainage.

APPLICATIONS

Wunder-Grates are ideal for pedestrian zones, heritage streetscapes, shopping precincts, residential driveways, public plazas, and any application where drainage is necessary but visual intrusion is unacceptable. They’re particularly valuable in shared spaces where cycle safety and pedestrian comfort are priorities.
