Large Format Recessed Access Covers
MULTI-LID WUNDER-COVERS
Multi-lid Wunder-Cover systems extend our recessed infill technology to large access openings where traditional single-lid solutions become impractical.
The modular configuration allows flexible arrangement of multiple smaller lids over a single large opening, making removal and maintenance easier while maintaining the seamless aesthetic integration of our standard Wunder-Cover system.
Manufactured in New Zealand.

FRAME INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS
Multi-lid frame
Proper frame installation – note continuous concrete bearing on all flanges and support points
Multi-lid frames span larger distances than single-lid systems, making proper support critical. The frame must bear loads across multiple points while maintaining level alignment for all lid trays.
Critical Support Requirements:
- Frame must be fully supported including all internal flanges and gussets
- Use good quality load-bearing concrete or similar bedding material
- Concrete must be fully cured before frame is subject to loads
- Ensure access chamber wall provides adequate support
Why This Matters: Inadequate support leads to frame deflection, misaligned lids, and potential structural failure. The diagrams above show proper bedding and support – note how the frame sits on continuous concrete bearing, not just at the corners.
Step 1: Set Frame Set the frame to desired level. Orient to suit paver pattern (optional). Ensure frame is fully supported on all edges and internal cross-members.
Step 2: Plaster & Lay Surrounding Pavers Plaster all gaps between frame and chamber. Lay pavers around the frame and cut neatly to the edge. Allow concrete to cure fully before proceeding.
Step 3: Insert Multi-Lid Trays Once concrete is firm, insert the individual lid trays into the frame. Each tray should sit flush within the frame openings.
Step 4: Infill Trays & Compact Screed sand into each tray. Cut and lay pavers to fit each tray as normal. Fill joints with dry sand and compact carefully.

FAQ
Frequently Asked
What are Wunder-Covers?
Wunder-Covers are recessed infill manhole covers designed to blend seamlessly with surrounding surfaces. The recessed tray accepts pavers, tiles, cobblestones, lawns, or gardens, making utility access virtually invisible while maintaining full functionality.
How heavy are multi-lid Wunder-Covers?
Each individual lid in a multi-lid system weighs approximately 15-20kg before infill installation, making them significantly easier to handle than a single large cover. Once filled with pavers, each lid is comparable to a small cast-iron cover but much more manageable for one person to remove.
Can multi-lid systems be used in high-traffic areas?
Yes. Multi-lid Wunder-Covers are designed to Class D load rating, suitable for driveways, car parks, and light-traffic areas. The modular frame design distributes loads effectively across multiple support points.
What materials are they made from?
Wunder-Covers are manufactured from hot-dipped galvanised steel as standard, with stainless steel available for coastal or high-salt environments. All covers are built for long-term durability in New Zealand conditions.
What happens if I only need to access part of the chamber?
That’s one of the key advantages of multi-lid systems. You can remove only the lids you need for access, leaving the rest in place. This minimises disruption and reduces the physical effort required for maintenance.
Can I use Wunder-Covers with tiles or concrete?
Yes. For tiles, asphalt, or similar rigid surfaces, the cover can be partially filled with concrete for added stability. The recessed design works with any surface material.
How do I remove a Wunder-Cover for maintenance?
Wunder-Covers are easily removed using standard utility lifting keys (T-handle lifters). The lightweight design (standard 600×600 unit weighs only 25kg) makes removal and reinstallation straightforward.
Do I need special tools for installation?
No special tools required. Wunder-Covers install using standard construction tools and techniques. Full installation guides and technical support are provided with every order.
ABOUT WUNDER-COVERS
Advanced Traffic Supplies pioneered the Wunder-Cover system over 25 years ago, solving a common infrastructure problem: how to provide utility access without compromising aesthetics.
Traditional cast-iron manhole covers are functional but visually intrusive. Wunder-Covers use a recessed infill system that allows access points to blend seamlessly with surrounding surfaces – pavers, tiles, cobblestones, lawns, or gardens.
HOW IT WORKS
The system consists of a hot-dipped galvanised steel frame and recessed lid. The frame is set around the access point, and the recessed tray accepts whatever surface material surrounds it. Once installed, only a thin frame outline remains visible while maintaining full access for maintenance.
APPLICATIONS
Multi-lid Wunder-Covers are ideal for large inspection chambers, pump stations, valve access points, telecommunications vaults, and any application requiring substantial access openings in high-quality streetscapes or landscaping.
